DOUBLE DEEP PALLET RACKING

Double Deep Pallet Racking allows you to dramatically increase storage without needing to expand your premises. Redundant aisle space is minimized, allowing you to increase the amount of floor space used for storage. As less aisle space is needed with this system when compared to standard pallet racking, you can truly maximise your storage space. Double-Deep Pallet Racks are installed allowing one pallet to be stored in front of another on each side of the aisle.

Direct access is only available for the front pallets, so it is recommended to store the same pallet types (load and product) to minimize the double movement of the forklifts or other lifting machinery.

NB: It is important to note that you will need a forklift truck with telescopic forks to access the pallets, but many clients find that this investment pays for itself very quickly.

What is Double Deep Pallet Racking?

Double Deep Pallet Racking is similar to Wide Aisle Pallet Racking; but pallets are now stored two rows deep instead of one.  his is a great option when similar products are being stored together.

Double Deep Racking utilises one row of standard pallet racking behind another. Using an extended reach lift truck, the operator places the pallet into the second row of the system first and then places another pallet in front of it.

A Double Deep system is composed of the same components as standard Adjustable Pallet Racking and can be taken down and repurposed into a fully selective system quickly and with minimal disruption to your operation. A bonus is that Double Deep Systems have good resale value after use as the basic components are in demand by second-hand racking suppliers.

Double Deep Pallet Racking does not require any specialist training to operate except for a set of fork extensions. The initial expenditure is kept low. Additional driver training for operators is not required and speed of access is much higher than many other deep storage systems such as Drive-In Racking.

What are the Benefits of Double Deep Pallet Racking?

  • Low Initial Cost
  • High Productivity
  • Ideal for Industrial Use
  • Reduces Number of Aisles
  • Reasonably Good Selectivity
  • Specialist Forklift Truck Required
  • LIFO Principle - Last In, First Out
  • Excellent for storing multiple pallets of the same product
  • Increases space utilization (Similar space utilization to Very Narrow Aisle Pallet Racking)

Density:

Higher density than conventional pallet racking for a much lower cost than other high-density systems such as drive in and pallet live. By using only standard pallet rack components to create a dense storage system (which is unique amongst the solutions for higher density) it keeps costs low and installation time to a minimum.

Simplicity:

Double deep racking does not require any specialist equipment to operate except for a set of fork extensions, meaning that initial expenditure is kept low to operate the system successfully. Additional driver training for operators is not required and speed of access is higher than many other deep storage systems such as drive in.

Flexibility:

A double deep system is composed of the same components as a standard adjustable pallet racking system and can be taken down and repurposed quickly and with minimal disruption into a fully selective system without the addition of any further components.

Stock Rotation:

The double deep system allows for items with an expiration date to be placed at the front section of the bay and therefore encourage their use before that of a fresher pallet of produce that has been placed behind. This system is relatively easy to implement with most WMS (Warehouse Management System) software.

Reduces Damage:

The upper storage levels can be fitted with guide rails to assist drivers in locating pallets and reduce the risk of error and accidental damage.

Maximise Storage Space:

As the number of aisles is reduced, the amount of floor space you can use for storage is greatly increased.

Sought After for Second Hand

The basic components of double deep are often in demand by second hand racking stockists as they are compatible with standard APR (which is the most common product for sale by companies that repurpose storage solutions). This is a huge boost for companies that are on a trajectory to outgrow their premises as, when moving out of a warehouse that you have outgrown, a double deep system in that warehouse will often be taken out for free by a second hand stockist (or potentially for a cash reimbursement) – taking you a big step of the way to completing your delap commitments on a rented property that you are vacating.

Almost as Selective High Density:

Double deep racking offers a higher density solution than standard pallet racking but also provides greater selectivity when compared to other true high-density systems such as drive in or flow racking. The only obstruction to the second pallet behind is a single pallet in front of it; This system is ideal for products stored and delivered in pairs of complementary pallets. It is especially useful for warehousing operations that have too much commonality of stock to justify the wasted space of a fully selective APR system but not enough to justify a higher density system such as drive in which requires at least four products of the same type to be stored in the same lane and removed in an exact order.

What are the disadvantages of Double Deep Pallet Racking?

Before installing Double Deep Pallet Racking, it is important to consider the type of product being stored and the number of SKU’s being stored. Best suited for fewer SKU’s and products with long shelf lives.

  • Decreased Pallet Selectivity

Pallets are less accessible, which is why double deep racking systems are best suited to operations that deal with bulk quantities of the same product. Due to the increased depth of the system, specialist fork trucks will be required. However, the increased storage capacity will offset the cost of the new trucks over time. Additionally, access to pallets is more restricted in comparison to a standard racking system.

How does Double Deep Racking work?

Double deep pallet racking systems comprise two runs of standard pallet racking which are placed back-to-back (like a normal, selective, double run) but is accessed on only one face: Pallets are stored two-deep in this configuration. The front pallet is accessed like any other pallet racking system and the back pallet is accessed using fork extensions or a forklift with telescopic forks.

Double deep racking is not really a “type” of racking, like Drive-In or Pallet Flow which are manufactured from highly specialised components. Double Deep refers to a certain configuration of standard pallet racking to achieve a certain goal.

Who uses Double Deep Pallet Racking?

Double Deep Pallet Racking is a smart solution for companies with a medium to high turnover of goods with lower SKU’s.

When used correctly, this system that has a higher density than standard pallet racking, with an element of selectivity retained versus very high density storage solutions.

What are the standard sizes of Double Deep Pallet Racking?

Each double deep racking system we supply and install is custom designed from either new or existing components within the warehouse.

What is the general layout of Double Deep Pallet Racking?

The layout and height of the racking are determined by the specification of the double deep reach trucks/forklifts, pallets to be stored, and the dimensions of the premises.

A warehouse is generally laid out with a single-entry wall racks on the perimeter sides and double-entry (back-to-back) racks in the middle.
