Which Dolly to Specify
Dollies are specified by load shape, not weight alone. A 400kg load sitting flat needs a different platform to a 400kg load standing upright.
Furniture dollies carry wide, flat loads: cabinets, crates, desks, palletised boxes. Look for a padded or timber deck to protect finished surfaces, and a footprint that supports the load fully with no overhang. The standard Dreymar deck at 800mm by 600mm handles most of this work at 400kg.
Appliance dollies hold tall loads upright: fridges, water heaters, filing cabinets, stacked drums. They carry a strap or belt to secure the load against the frame and tilt back onto two large wheels rather than sitting on four castors. Specify by load height and strap capacity. For upright moving in tight spaces, a folding nose trolley covers the same work with a smaller footprint.
Drum dollies are purpose-built for 210 litre drums, with a circular cradle that locates the drum base and stops it walking in transit. Where the job involves lifting, tipping or decanting rather than moving, drum handling equipment is the correct specification.
Platform dollies are the general-purpose option: a flat steel deck on four swivel castors, no handle, sized to slide under mixed loads. Where the load needs pushing over distance rather than positioning, a platform trolley with a handle is the better choice.
