What is a Castor Wheel?

A castor is a relatively small, undriven wheel that is housed within a small steel structure (called a housing) that allows the castor to attach to the bottom of a larger object (most often a trolley)

This allows the larger object to be moved freely and easily.

“Undriven” means that the wheel is free rolling and not powered in any way.

The next time you are at the local supermarket, have a look at the bottom of the nearest shopping trolley and you will see castor wheels in action.

It is important to note that the word “castor” can also be spelt “caster” – “Caster” is the US form of the word and both versions are widely accepted and refer to the same product.

Each castor wheel is available in three different types of housing mechanisms:

Plate Fixed
Plate Swivel
Plate Swivel Brake

Each of these models of castor wheels are attached to an object (most often a trolley) using four bolts and nuts (or screws) which go into each corner of the plate (Please refer to the specific plate size, bolt size and hole spacing of each individual castor wheel for more detailed information)

Certain caster and wheel models are available with a Bolt-Hole fitting: This fitting allows the castor wheels to be attached using a single, centre bolt.
